There's a Voodoo emulator VXD for Win9X...It's simple enough in principle and didn't require any knowledge of the data files. Seems like it would be easier to extend its strategy, incorporating appropriate device emulation/mapping, and run the original code, rather than rewriting it (and possibly missing features). Just saying, is all. Not as flexible, in that it would not be portable between different OSes and CPUs (unless you want to make a machine-code interpreter).
The author is Gilbert Rouquié, no email available, written in 2000.

Well... as far as emulating U7, it does what it does. But that doesn't mean that can't keep adding really nice new features.

Ah, but thank goodness these tallented people have taken the time to reverse engineer the code and add other goodies. It will make the game playable for far longer, and as you said, be portable to more OS's. Let's also not forget the cushy features that make Exult (running Ultima 7) more friendly, and look better. Yes, you can use U7Run.exe, and then switch to Exult, and see what you like and dislike about both. Eventually, Exult will be honed into a true representation of everything U7 and SI was intended to be, and then some. Exult will get better, and better. U7 and SI, while being the classics will always stay the same. But Exult has been crafted "to pay homage" to these great games in a non-invasive way. That's why the developers have gone to the trouble. It makes the games alive again (as far as development) instead of static worlds. As far as missed features, hopefully the Exult team will discover what little remains of them, and incorporate them. In doing this exercise they have also created a means of creating new games.
