Summon Shade won't work

I have reached the heirophant's coffin in the isle of the dead. I've tried casting summon shade there, but nothing happens, just a puff of smoke.

What's wrong? I have the three serpents (chaos, order, balance) and also some serpent artefacts (earrings, necklace, ring) - not sure if these are needed here or not).
