Exult and/or Keyring mod translations

Post by SirJohn »

Hi everybody,

I am currently busy creating a German language version for U7 BG. While the patch I do does not need Exult to run, it would be neat to have it fully compatible. One of my beta testers just found out that Exult and moreso the keyring mod reverts some of the translations back to English. I checked the source code on guthub and found some of the text hardcoded there.

Is there any chance, you can make Exult available in other languages than English? I am not talking about the translation work here, of course. I will happily do this, but the code adjustments and compiling stuff is far beyonf my comfort zone ;-)

Any luck or is the project indeed stalled for the time being?

The mods can be easily translated and re-packed (and usecode needs to be compiled).
Exult itself would need recoding to make it localizable (is that a word? ;)).
There might be some little text messages that need extra translation and can be included (exultmsg_de.txt or so in the data folder of our source) with Exult.

Oh, of course your translation is very likely not being recognized as a non-english version. I'm not sure how we determine it (or if we actually do itand this localizing was just gap filling) but we probably do a crc check on the usecode file.
We might be able to workaround it by supplying the exultmsg.txt in a patch folder of your translation.
If you want, send me the translation and I'll give it a try.

Hi Dominus,

thanks heaps for your kind offer. The translation for the Exult parts is not yet done. But as soon as I have finished the remaining convos for the Forge of Virtue Add ons, I'll check again on github what files need translations and send you the strings to the mail addrfess given in your profile. Is that ok with you or was it another approach you had in mind?

That's fine. In the meantime, I'll hopefully find time to look into it. Probably in how the si-french translation worked.
It may be that for Exult it might be better to have everything in a patch folder so that Exult correctly recognizes FOV and then the patch takes over. But, I need to look that over.
Btw. your translation projects are crazy! (in a good way) :)

SirJohn,

I translated FOV and Silver Seed Addons into spanish, and they worked perfectly well in Exult (although Exult has its own menus and dialogues in English). You should translate also exultmsg.txt in \Exult\Data for some Introduction and Ending text sequences.

I also translated sifixes and keyring mod (from the sources, available in Exult Downloads), and you must recompile all the files with ucc.exe tool. It Works. I think you must add translated sources with the translation, but it is only because of license agreement, not because they be necesary to play.

Have in mind that if you have changed fonts or any other things, you should apply the changes also in the text of source files.

Good luck with the translation!
