Is this a bug? and OT game question

Been playing through SI again with Exult and ever since the knighthood banquet that one pikeman that lets you into the training arena hasn't been there. You know who I'm talking about; the one pikeman that sits at the desk. Is this a bug? I'm venturing further in the game and getting my ass handed to me by these goblins because I can't get better at combat.

And here's a quetion for the game: What do you guys think? Is it better to use a basic one-handed weapon, like sword, and gain the protection of a sheild or is it better to just go for the big damage of a two-handed weapon? This is excluding, of course, magical weapons. I'm just talking about sword versus two-handed sword or halberd.

Oh, dude, I swear I totally went through all the FAQ but somehow missed that.

U7 combat has many complicated things going on, but after all it is much too fast and running auomatically so that it never matters much anyway, what weapon you use

Go for big damage. Two handed / halberd all the way. I find that those with the big damage weapons gain EXP faster than those that don't because they're doing all the killing.

In SI, until I get magic weapons, I equip everyone with halberds and two handed swords.

And when I get the blackrock sword back, I always just leave it on the avatar.
