exult.cfg not being read

I recently compiled the latest CVS of exult, .97, on my slackware 7.1 system. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like exult.cfg is being read. IE if I point the blackgate path to my BG directory, it says data path not found for either games, but if im IN the blackgate directory, it works just fine - of course then SI won't work. Another reason I'm suspicious exult.cfg plainly isn't being read is when I run exult, regardless of my data_path, it always uses /usr/local/share/exult as the data path. I've tried sticking exult.cfg in /usr/local/share/exult and the directories from which I run the game even, but to no avail. Suggestions?
