SI is crashing so much now it's unplayable for me... not sure what's wrong. it started off that it would crash whenever i saved game other than Quick Save... so i've been using quick save. from the forest master bit onwards even quick save caused me to crash - but at least this time it would save the game THEN crash - previously it just crashed and lost my save game.
Now it's crashing every time something interesting happens on screen, for example going up or down stairs in a dungeon (when it 'teleports' you to a different part of the map, also happens when going to the icy plains), and is crashing when the wizard gets out of his coffin now too. i'm about to install the latest snapshot and will let you know later on today if it made any difference.

Kurt: It sounds like your savegame is seriously corrupted. This kind of corruption will cause tons of problems. Reloading an old savegame should help.

I downloaded the latest snapshot now exult won't even load, hehe...

My savegame is corrupted and I have to revert to an earlier one?
trouble is, I don't actually have an earlier one, because as I mentioned in another thread, SI crashed every time I tried to save in any slot other than the quicksave slot.
Sucks.

Possible anyone can email me a savegame at the skullcrusher entrance? *grins*
I really don't want to have to start again, hehe.

So you could never save throughout the entire game? Not even at the very beginning?
Kurt

no, not at all.
I did post that the other day. think it got no replies though :(

could you zip up your entire SI "gamedat" directory and email it to me? I'd like to see if I can figure out what causes this crash.

oh, btw, if you're wondering, the 'gamedat' directory is where the current game is being stored. (The 'quicksave' saves to the files in this directory)

Re: SI and BG crash

I think I made a major cockup here...

I tried loading up SI using U7win, which I thought I had put into a different directory from where exult is. I started a new game.
Which of course, has now overwritten my gamedat directory, because I was stupid enough to use the same copy of SI *snarls*
that'll teach me to try to play SI at 9am.

Any other alternative?

So I overwrote my quicksave?
balls.

anyway, trying to start a new game gives in stderr.txt:

Scary. Could you try deleting your gamedat before starting a new game in exult?
Kurt

Re: SI and BG crash

tried, same message.
oddly this has only happened since I installed the beta version of exult.

Also have tried reinstalling both SI and Exult (in different folder) and still get the same problem.

I'm kind of out of ideas here, so I'll just list some things that could possibly be causing trouble:

You didn't accidently install Jeff's mapedit demo in SI or anything?
Do you have the Silver Seed or just the original SI?
Could you be using out-of-date exult.flx/exult_si.flx files?

Also, could you post the full sdtout.txt, stderr.txt?
Kurt

Re: SI and BG crash

Nope, never used it.
Silver Seed
Well I completely re-installed both SI and Exult and had the same problem, so I guess i'm up to date :)

when starting a new game, typed in char's name, picked portrait, hit journey onward, then I'm kicked to windows desktop.

Could you try deleting your gamedat dir (again), and start another new game.
Could you then list the contents of the gamedat dir after the crash here?
Kurt

Re: SI and BG crash

it doesnt even make a gamedat dir when I try to start a new game, just crashes.
and if I make a blank gamedat dir for it to use, it still crashes.
Kurt

okay now but stderr is just saying : Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

and nothing else

And the original SI (using U7run) did work properly? This is really weird...

There's hardly anything between the message in stdout.txt "Creating 'gamedat' files" and actually creating that directory.

Oh, after re-installing SI, did you setup Exult to use the new SI directory, or could it have still used the old one?
Kurt

Re: SI and BG crash

odd, after deleting gamedat, the corrupted save games (from where i had previously tried to save but just crashed instead), in my first installation of SI, I loaded again and hit journey onward and it started again from the beginning - but again crashed if I used any save slot other than quicksave.

which is exactly what happened when I started playing last time, up until I got to skullcrusher, then it would just constantly crash all the time.

Odd. If you press journey onward from the menu and it does something, that means gamedat is still around. Are you sure you deleted the right gamedat?

Anyway, if you again have a gamedat that consistently crashes exult when saving, could you zip it up and email it to me?

Kurt: the gamedat which you emailed me still contains data from the original SI. Also, the exult data in there was created by a version older than the beta. Are you sure you sent the correct gamedat dir?

I have the exactly same problem. Start a new SI game and Exult just quits to my desktop. On Windows XP, BTW, if that makes any difference.

Could you try deleting your d:\games\ultima vii - part ii - serpent isle\gamedat directory, and after that starting a new SI game?

If it still crashes then, could you list the contents of that gamedat dir?

hmm... will have to look at that. Not going to be home until tomorrow night now. I thought I sent the right one.

I might also try reinstalling everything again, perhaps I made a mistake last time? *looks confused*
Or perhaps some Exult files didn't install properly. I'll do everything manually next time instead :)

try not using spaces in the directory names.

I did and ta-da -- it worked!

Funny that BG works fine with spaces, but SI doesn't.

/me bows humbly and returns to his solitude.
Kurt

Re: SI and BG crash

Post by Kurt »

considering mine is installed in c:\ultima\ultima 7 part 2\
that could be why everything got buggered up.

Hopefully that'll work, I'll try it tomorrow night.
Meanwhile can anyone PLEASE send me a savegame that is anywhere between arriving in the northern snow lands and going to skullcrusher?

I will be absolutely ecstatic if I don't have to do all that again *gasps*.
